Schoodic Education and Research Center Institute, along with the National Park Service, today is celebrating the grand opening of its $18 million center in Acadia National Park.
NPS used congressional appropriations and park user fees collected over the past nine years to renovate the former Naval Security Group Activity base into SERC's new campus in Winter Harbor, according to the Bar Harbor Times. The campus includes classrooms, laboratories, lodging, dining rooms and a 125-seat auditorium. The total investment includes $9.3 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, who authored the legislation that conveyed the former navy base to the Department of the Interior, and other officials will be on hand at the grand opening ceremony happening today at 2 p.m.
The SERC Institute is one of 20 such research centers in the country, and offers educational programs and research opportunities on nature, science and history.
