A week after a study by the state's labor research agency that saw a 14% decline in manufacturing jobs from 2007 to 2011, the state's Department of Economic and Community Development is pointing to a new machine shop set to open in Limington as evidence of bucking that trend.
While the study notes that job losses aren't tied directly to manufacturing productivity – output from Maine manufacturers did not see significant drops from 2000 to 2011, according to the study – state officials are touting the new facility as "further proof that manufacturing is alive and well."
The DECD reported that Archer Machine will move into the building of the former machining company, Metal Works Inc., at 482 Sokokis Ave. in Limington and that the company was able to receive tax incentives to help start the business.
A press release announcing the move did not identify the amount of the tax incentives it said facilitated the purchase of upgraded equipment, but did indicate that the company's president, Michael Hanes, plans to hire five people immediately at average salaries of around $40,000.
The company will make industrial valves for submarines, aircraft carriers, power plants and wastewater treatment systems.
The DECD press release indicates that Archer plans an initial investment of around $600,000 at the 8,500-square-foot facility.
