New shipping regs loom for lobstermen

Maine lobstermen have been warned that new federal shipping regulations taking effect this summer could delay deliveries if lobsters aren't properly inspected and packed.

Yvette Jamison, a principal cargo security analyst with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, told lobstermen gathered for a recent two-day seminar in Portland that come August, all cargo must be processed in secure facilities before being loaded into the cargo holds of passenger aircraft, reported the Bar Harbor Times. Any bulk shipments of lobster will have to be separated and inspected, potentially causing delays and affecting containers' temperature control.

Jamison said lobstermen might want to consider undergoing a training program to become certified shippers themselves, or hire freight forwarders.
