New uses eyed for newly acquired downtown Wiscasset building

This 1900-era property at 51 Water St. in Wiscasset was purchased by Craig and Laurie Winslow of Falmouth for $225,000, according to the Tim Dunham Realty website. The Lincoln County News reported that the Winslows hope to attract a beer-oyster bar and a coffee roaster to fill two vacancies in the commercial building.
A prominent commercial building in Wiscasset has been sold and the new owners hope to attract retail tenants that could be downtown anchors.
The Lincoln County News reported that Craig and Laurie Winslow of Falmouth purchased the 51 Water St. building from Schuyler Fairfield and hope to attract a craft beer-oyster bar and a coffee roaster to fill two vacancies. The sale price was $225,000, according to the listing on the Tim Dunham Realty website.
Fairfield operated Fairfield of Wiscasset Signs for 50 years.
The building, which dates back to 1900, is adjacent to the lobster shack Red's Eats and benefits from high visibility, village foot traffic and nearly 18,000 vehicles per day passing by on Route 1, according to its original listing on the Tim Dunham Realty website.
The property has storefronts along both Water Street and Railroad Avenue and included an upper-story residential unit. It had been listed with an asking price of $275,000.
Downtown Wiscasset is in the midst of Maine Department of Transportation improvements that include full road reconstruction, new sidewalks and other work along Route 1, Railroad Avenue, Water Street and Creamery Wharf. Work began in June 2018 and it is expected to be completed in October 2019. Work was suspended for the winter on Dec. 7 and is anticipated to resume April 15.
