New uses studied for former Bar Harbor ferry terminal

Plans continue for the conversion of the idle international ferry terminal property in Bar Harbor for cruise ship use, the Mount Desert Islander reported.

The topic will be discussed at a public meeting March 10 with consultants Bermello, Ajamil and Partners, which conducted several studies of the property. B&A, headquartered in Miami, Fla., provides architectural, engineering and construction services, including cruise terminal design, on six continents.

In November, Maine voters approved an $85 million statewide transportation bond issue that included the remaining money needed toward the $3.5 million price that will allow the Maine Port Authority to purchase the terminal from the Canadian crown corporation Marine Atlantic. Converting the terminal is seen as a way to relieve congestion at Bar Harbor’s town landing, where cruise ship tendering takes place from spring into the fall.

State Rep. Brian Hubbell told the paper that it’s possible tender operations could begin at the former ferry terminal this year, “but that will require some infrastructure improvements including floats and docks.”
