New 'wayfinding' map seeks to enhance Ellsworth’s downtown

In its latest initiative to attract visitors to Ellsworth’s downtown area, a community organization has updated a “wayfinding” map that features a variety of businesses and greenspaces.

Heart of Ellsworth created the map, with sponsorship by Witham Family Hotels, a large hotel group in the area.

The map was designed by a local designer, Eunju Won, and installed by Banner City Graphics in Bucksport. A large-format version was adhered to the side of a Main Street building locally known as the JB Atlantic building. The goal of the large version is to be available for downtown visitors as they visit the Main Street district.

The map shows the location of 46 businesses, including 15 new locations and features that were added to the 2021 version.

“With more than 10 new businesses, the 2021 map needed an update,” said Cara Romano, Heart of Ellsworth’s executive director. “What resulted was an easy-to-use comprehensive map depicting our Main Street.”

Objectives include attracting visitors to downtown and highlighting the re-establishment of a space called the Franklin Street Parklet in the downtown district, Romano added.

Later this month, postcards will be printed and distributed for free circulation and available at area shops and eateries. A digital PDF version of the map will be distributed and available online; all area businesses are encouraged to post on company websites and shop window.

Founded in 2015, Heart of Ellsworth, a nonprofit representing downtown merchants,  promotes economic, artistic, cultural, educational, historical and environmental activities in the “Downtown” area to provide a vibrant community for all residents, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and local government.
