NewPage brings 850 back to work

NewPage Corp. restarted three paper machines at its Rumford mill over the weekend, bringing 850 employees back to work, according to the Sun Journal.

The machines had been shut down for routine maintenance on May 11. The employees are usually kept working during maintenance periods, but were temporarily laid off this time around, the paper reported. NewPage permanently laid off 130 employees in January.

Miamisburg, Ohio-based NewPage said earlier this month that demand for the coated paper it manufactures in Rumford has declined by 30% since last year and that, to balance supply with demand, it would reduce its production during the first half of 2009 by 300,000 tons.
