NextEra meets with Farmington residents on 50MW solar array
NextEra Energy officials met with Farmington residents Wednesday to discuss the 50-megawatt solar array it plans to build on land at Sandy River Farms on U.S. Route 2, one of the 14 projects it has acquired from Ranger Solar of Yarmouth.
The Florida-based company is also developing a 20-megawatt, 120-panel solar farm in Fairfield, which officials said earlier this month would supply energy for about 7,000 homes in Connecticut, as well as a 50-megawatt project in Sanford.
In Farmington, there is enough land on the 600-acre dairy and crop farm site for a 75-megawatt facility, enough to power over 26,000 homes, Scott Busa, the company’s director of development, told the Lewiston Sun Journal. The project is still in the planning and permitting stages, and company representatives plan to meet with Farmington selectmen Tuesday.
The project is scheduled to be online sometime next year, and officials have said it would provide 185 jobs during construction and six to operate it.
Ranger Solar develops solar projects and last October won bids to develop the Farmington and Sanford projects, as well as projects in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
NextEra, which operates hydro, wind and solar power plants, has 29 solar facilities in seven states and also runs the Cousin’s Island oil-powered plant in Yarmouth.
