Why live in a college dorm room when you can rent a townhouse apartment on campus with a group of friends?
That’s what 63 students are doing in three new dwellings at Husson University in Bangor. The townhouses, built at a cost of $6.5 million including furniture, appliances and infrastructure, were unveiled at a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony that wrapped up with tours of a model apartment.
Pamela Kropp-Anderson, Husson’s dean of student life, sees the new buildings as an important step between life in the residence halls and independent living.
“They’re a great and convenient way for a group of friends who share similar majors or interests to live together,” she said in a statement. “That can lead to improved academic performance.”
She added that townhouse residents have the option of either preparing meals in their own kitchens or signing up for campus meal plans with dining services.
Rents are $3,510 per semester or $7,020 per academic year, for nine months. The price includes utilities, a washer and dryer, kitchen, cable TV/Internet hookup, snow removal and lawn care. Each dwelling has six shared apartments.
Husson University is flexible with housing costs and offers 12-month contracts, which executive communications director Eric Gordon said is attractive to international students and others wanting to stay on campus over the summer.
Students can also make special arrangements to have their costs adjusted in special circumstances, such as when they leave to study abroad or do an internship.
Gordon said that nine townhouse beds are being kept open for students who start in the spring semester, which begins in January.
Husson University says that about 1,100 students currently reside on campus.
The recently constructed townhouses are part of Husson’s ongoing efforts to enhance its Bangor campus. More than $9 million in improvements completed over the summer include renovations to Hart Hall, updated entrances to the O'Donnell Commons and the Newman Gymnasium, upgrades to the campus power grid, and the first construction phase of a new maintenance facility.
It’s also seeking to raise $16 million towards construction of a new College of Business building, helped by a $4 million matching grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation announced in April, the largest in the school’s history.
Once completed, the 32,000-square-foot building will feature experiential classrooms fusing business education with science, technology, engineering, art and math.
