NH-Maine bridge damaged by tanker reopens

The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge connecting Maine and New Hampshire, which was damaged by an oil tanker on April 1, reopened to vehicle traffic Monday.

The reopening occurred ahead of schedule, according to MPBN. Originally, authorities had estimated the bridge would remain closed until Memorial Day weekend.

Meanwhile, a fundraising effort to light up a new bridge connecting Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery is close to its $200,000 goal. MPBN reported that more than 95 individuals and 28 businesses and organizations pledged or donated more than $150,000 to install LED lights to illuminate the Memorial Bridge's towers, piers and memorial plaque.

That bridge is expected to open in July and will restore three crossings of the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth and Kittery: Interstate-95 High Level Bridge; Route 1 Memorial Bridge; and Route 1 Bypass (also known as the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge).
