Front Street Shipyard in Belfast has landed a $120,897 Boating Infrastructure Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as the federal government's matching funds for a $241,795 waterfront rehabilitation project.
That project includes building new slips and moorings for boats used by visitors to the mid-coast region.
Plans call for Front Street Shipyard to add 12 new slips, plus five 40-foot harbor floats, all of which will be devoted to visiting boaters. Bathrooms, showers and wireless Internet also will be installed in a new marina. Over the next year, the boatyard will add 21 new moorings for visiting boaters, according to a press release announcing the grant.
Earlier this year, the Belfast boatyard was named the 2013 Boatyard of the Year by the American Boat Builders and Repairers Association. It was established in 2011 at the site of the former Stinson Seafood cannery as a boatbuilding, repair, service and storage facility, and employs more than 100.
