N.H. timber co. buys 3,200 acres near Acadia

New Hampshire-based Lyme Timber Co. has bought more than 3,000 acres of land next to Acadia National Park with plans to mostly conserve the property, where the previous owners had proposed a controversial eco-resort.

Lyme Timber Co. bought 3,200 acres for an undisclosed price from Winter Harbor Holdings, a firm owned in part by Bruno and Vittorio Modena, an Italian father and son who in 2008 proposed developing an eco-resort including hotels, a golf course and housing, the Bangor Daily News reported. The proposal sparked local opposition because of its impact to the area and the nearby park. Lyme Managing Director Peter Stein told the paper the company will keep the property classified as tree growth for tax purposes, but harvesting practices have not been determined and won't happen soon. Any future development would be small-scale, possibly including some residential lots in consultation with park officials, he said. Maine Coast Heritage Trust has a five-year option to purchase conservation easement for 1,500 acres. Lyme owns more than 36,000 acres in Maine.

Sheridan Steele, superintendent of Acadia National Park, said the park was happy the property had changed hands.
