Unemployment down in November
Maine's unemployment rate decreased last month to 7.0%, according to the Maine Department of Labor. The preliminary November rate is down from October's revised rate of 7.3% and November 2010's rate of 7.5%.
The number of unemployed totaled 49,000, down 3,600 from a year ago. There were 596,400 nonfarm payroll jobs in November, unchanged from the revised October estimate.
The U.S. unemployment rate was 8.6%, down from 9.0% in October and 9.8% a year ago. The New England average was 7.3%; rates in other states in the region were 5.2% in New Hampshire, 5.3% in Vermont, 7.0% in Massachusetts, 10.5% in Rhode Island and 8.4% in Connecticut.
