Northern Maine Community College is welcoming what officials say is its largest class in the school's 48-year history, thanks in part to a first-of-its-kind wind power technology training program.
Enrollment for the class of 2009 grew 11% from last year to 581 students, according to the Bangor Daily News. Tim Crowley, president of the Presque Isle community college, attributed the growth to several factors, including its efforts to attract more students in Aroostook County with new and expanded course offerings. New this year is a wind power technology training program it announced last September, which has proven very popular, Jason Parent, NMCC's director of development and college relations, told Mainebiz via email. More than 60 students applied for the program's original 18 slots, prompting the college to double capacity to 36, Parent said. The program, the first of its kind in New England, was announced last year.
The college's other trades programs and its nursing and medical programs, have drawn more students this year as well, according to the Daily News. The college has hired additional instructors and adjunct faculty members to handle the increase in students, despite last year's budget reduction of $400,000, Crowley told the paper.
