Northern pot dispensary to open soon
A medical marijuana dispensary in northern Maine is set to become the first in the state to begin supplying patients.
Safe Alternatives, which in July received a state license to operate a dispensary, plans to start delivering its first crop of medical marijuana from a cultivation facility in Frenchville within the next two weeks, according to the Portland Press Herald. The company also plans to open a storefront dispensary soon in Eagle Lake. Leo Trudel, a business professor at the University of Maine at Fort Kent and owner of Safe Alternatives, says the business will largely be delivery-based due to its rural location. It will be the first dispensary to operate on the East Coast.
Meanwhile, dispensaries Down East and in Lewiston-Auburn could begin operating in the next several weeks. Maine Organic Therapy in Ellsworth plans to begin delivering marijuana to patients later this month and open a storefront by May 1, and Remedy Compassion Center is planning to open its dispensary in the Auburn Plaza in April. The state approved a total of eight dispensaries, and others in Portland, Biddeford, Bangor, Thomaston and Augusta aren't slated to begin operating until May or June, according to the paper.
