A Down East wreath company has become the first in Maine to sign onto a program with U.S. immigration officials to strengthen hiring practices of migrant workers.
Whitney Wreath this week signed an agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that helps ensure the company complies with laws regarding foreign workers, according to the Bangor Daily News. By signing the ICE Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers, Whitney Wreath has agreed to give the federal agency access to its records, and also performed assessments of its hiring practices and trained employees on screening tools to prevent hiring of illegal immigrants. "I feel strongly that it helps migrant workers find a clear, predictable path to legal employment, while at the same time it provides a clear and understandable path for employers to comply," President and CEO David Whitney told the paper. Whitney said about 10% of his 600-person seasonal work force are migrant workers.
ICE in recent years has increased its focus on illegal workers and fined companies, including some in Maine, for non-compliance. Whitney Wreath is the fourth in New England to sign the agreement.
