Northern rail work about 25% complete

The state has finished about 25% of $10.5 million in repairs on 233 miles of railroad lines in northern Maine, and will resume work next year.

Since August, contractors have replaced about half of 7,500 feet of rail lines and about 11,000 of 50,000 rail ties included in repair work, according to the Bangor Daily News. Work has been suspended due to weather conditions and will resume next year, with an expected completion date of fall 2012. A grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation is funding the project. Though repair work hasn't finished, freight customers should already notice improvements, according to the paper.

The state last year bought the rail lines from Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway after the company announced plans to abandon the Madawaska-to-Millinocket lines due to losses operating them. In April the state tapped Eastern Maine Railway as operator of the lines.
