Northern workers eligible for TAA funds

Laid-off workers in two northern Maine towns are now eligible for aid through the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program.

Former employees of Fraser Timber Ltd. in Ashland and Anderson Hardwood Floors LLC in Patten can now apply for job training and other re-employment services through the Department of Labor's TAA program, according to the Bangor Daily News. The program helps workers who are laid off as a result of foreign competition. A DOL investigation showed that workers at Fraser Timber lost their jobs because of a rise in imports of dimensional lumber, while Anderson Hardwood workers were affected by imports of products that competed with the company's veneers for engineered hardwood flooring.

It is unclear how many workers are eligible for the benefits.
