Nova Scotia delays Nova Star decision

The future of Nova Star’s ferry service between Portland and Nova Scotia remains up in the air after a top Nova Scotia official said it has delayed any decision on whether it will continue.

Geoff MacLellan, Nova Scotia’s minister of transportation and tourism, said Thursday he has “decided to take more time to make sure we get this right for Nova Scotians for the long term,” according to a statement received by the Bangor Daily News. He added that the province is still considering proposals from other ferry service operators for next season.

MacLellan said the province had recently turned down Nova Star’s request for additional government subsidies out of the $13 million the ferry service operator was promised this season because the ferry operator hasn’t provided the latest financial information. He added that Nova Star’s operator provided that information this week, but Nova Scotia won’t release any further money until it’s reviewed.
