Nova Scotia panel seeks new ferry bids by June

Canadian provincial officials have created a new panel tasked with boosting tourism in the region as the province looks for new bids to operate a ferry service between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

The Portland Press Herald reported the new panel is requesting proposals from prospective ferry operators by June 20.

The province is offering a $21 million subsidy over seven years to the prospective operator of the ferry service, a move officials hope will boost tourism in the region. A ferry service between Maine and the Canadian province last operated in 2009.

Previous attempts to find a bidder to provide the service earlier this year failed. The latest RFP seeks to start service in 2014.

Correction: A previous version of this story repeated a reporting error in saying the province's new panel would review bids for potential ferry operators. The new panel, led by Yarmouth, Nova Scotia mayor Pam Mood will oversee $1 million in funds to study efforts to increase tourism in the area and not the $21 million ferry subsidy offered by the province.
