OSHA seeks $76K fine for Gardiner co.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is seeking to fine a Gardiner pipe supplier more than $76,000 for what the agency says are repeated and serious violations of workplace safety standards.

The U.S. Department of Labor administration reported in a press release Monday that the proposed fines against Everett J. Prescott Inc. follow inspections of a Scarborough worksite that began in March.

Investigators from the agency's Augusta office inspected the worksite  as part of a national OSHA effort to enforce excavation safety standards, according to a press release.

Inspectors said they found numerous repeat violations — meaning the company has been fined for the same or similar violation within the last five years — and a new violation connected with the excavation operation.

Those violations included practices intended to protect excavations deeper than 5 feet from collapse.

OSHA reported the company now has 15 days from receipt of its citations to comply, meet with OSHA or contest the findings.
