The owner of the Nova Star Cruises ferry has begun making settlements with companies owed money by the operator of the ferry.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Singapore Technologies Marine, a Singapore shipbuilder that owns the ship, has settled with Portland Pilots, Sprague Operating Resources and McAllister Towing and Transportation Co. so far.
In late October, after Nova Star ended its second season operating the Portland-to-Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, route, U.S. marshals seized the ship due to claims of unpaid bills. More than $3 million in claims were filed in federal court in Portland, the Press Herald reported.
Portland Pilots was owed $195,000, Sprague Operating Resources was owed $147,000 for fuel and McAllister Towing was owed $12,000 for tugboat services.
Shortly before the ferry was seized the Nova Scotia government announced it was negotiating with a different ferry operator for the route next year.
In both seasons, the ferry service missed passenger goals and asked for additional subsidies from Nova Scotia. The provincial government gave $41.5 million Canadian ($31.5 million USD) to Nova Star.
