Ocean lab wins grant

The National Science Foundation has awarded the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences more than $600,000 for oceanography research.

The West Boothbay lab will use the $603,631 grant to conduct studies on iron-oxidizing bacteria, according to a press release form U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

The funded project will be directed by David Emerson, a senior research microbiologist at the lab who specializes in studying “neutrophilic, oxygen-dependent iron-oxidizing bacteria in environments as varied as undersea volcanoes, shipwrecks of archeological interest, and the rhizosphere of wetland plants,” according to the lab’s website. His investigations include looking at the influence the bacteria may have on greenhouse gas emissions and the corrosion of steel.
