Offshore wind farm proposed

A Boston company has shown interest in building a large wind farm off the coast of Maine.

Blue H USA wants to build a 90-turbine wind farm somewhere in the Gulf of Maine that could generate 450 megawatts of electricity, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company claims to have patented a wind turbine that sits on a floating platform, is smaller and lighter than most land-based turbines yet produces more power, the paper said. The company has filed paperwork with the U.S. Minerals Management Service to build a demonstration project off the coast of Massachusetts, the paper said.

The company said Maine's shipbuilding industry would provide the necessary labor force to build the offshore wind-energy project. It has briefed state leaders in Maine and is already talking to potential partners, including Pittsfield-based Cianbro, the paper said.
