A man from Howland had an extra reason to celebrate on New Year’s Eve — or actually, a million reasons.

Blaine Marston was the country’s lucky winner of a $1 million prize in a Powerball lottery promotion for players who hadn’t been lucky in previous drawings. At midnight Tuesday in New York City, lottery officials randomly chose Marston from 300 players who’d purchased non-winning tickets during 2019.

Marston’s selection as the first Powerball Millionaire of the Year was announced nationally by country music artist Jessie James Decker during ABC’s live broadcast of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2020.”

“I can’t even believe it, this is unreal,” Marston said in a news release. “Like I’m dreaming!”

Launched during last year’s New Year’s Eve telecast, the promotion allowed lottery players in 25 participating jurisdictions to enter their tickets in a series of second-chance drawings for the $1 million prize. The 300 semi-finalists, randomly chosen from those regions, received VIP trips to New York, where five finalists were chosen.

Marston was scheduled to receive his prize check from Maine State Lottery officials Friday morning. It’s estimated he’ll net roughly $710,000 from his winnings after taxes.

Powerball tickets, which go for $2 apiece, are sold in 44 states including Maine, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
