A controversial proposal aimed at protecting minors from marketing efforts has been revived in the Legislature.
Sen. Elizabeth Schneider, D-Orono, has submitted LD 1677, which prohibits pharmaceutical marketers from collecting personal information from teenagers between 13 and 17 years old, after a similar measure last year was scrapped, according to the Kennebec Journal. Last year's bill would have prevented companies from collecting personal health information online from any child younger than 18, but it died after a number of lawsuits were filed and Attorney General Janet Mills deemed it in violation of the state constitution. Schneider says the revised bill will "protect minors from marketing in unscrupulous ways, especially framed around pharmaceutical companies," according to the paper.
The Business, Research and Economic Development Committee will discuss the revised version of the bill, but no public hearing date has been set.
