Pratt & Whitney lays off 17

Seventeen workers at the Pratt & Whitney plant in North Berwick are being laid off due to a workload shortage.

The layoffs, announced Friday, are effective Jan. 15, according to news channel WGME 13. Company spokesman Greg Brostowicz told the news channel the layoffs are part of cost-cutting measures the company has undertaken recently, including offering buyouts to 20 employees at the end of last year.

The facility manufactures aircraft engines, gas turbines and space propulsion systems and employed 1,300 people as of last October, according to the Portland Press Herald.
