Orion Ropeworks leases storage space as demand booms

Since Orion Ropeworks’ acquisition during the pandemic, its business has boomed so much it’s outgrown its Winslow homebase and needs additional storage space.

Orion Ropeworks LLC, dba Orion Cordage, leased 30,000 square feet of industrial space at 650 River Ave. in South Gardiner. Sam LeGeyt and Justin Lamontagne from the Dunham Group and Jon Rizzo from the Boulos Co. brokered the lease.

“They needed additional space for product storage,” said Rizzo. “They are bursting at the seams at their Winslow location and will be building on to their existing property there.”

"Industrial inventory is very limited right now, so we were helping them for a few months find the right space,” Rizzo said.

Rizzo said the vacancy rate for industrial space is 1.85% statewide, so companies are having to expand their search radius much further than in the past.

The new storage facility in Gardiner may be temporary as Orion plans to break ground within the next 12 months on an additional 23,000 square feet in Winslow, to add to the 112,000 square feet it currently has.

Still, with business growing so quickly at Orion, it’s too soon to say how long the Gardiner storage facility will be needed, said Orion plant manager Vito Venturelli.

“COVID has driven parts of our business that we didn’t have before. For every container that’s stuck on ships, that’s business for us,” Venturelli said. “We have more power, government and domestic customers who can’t buy products overseas. It just isn’t available. So they’re coming to us.”

Orion has about 100 workers working three shifts, Venturelli said.

Orion Ropeworks and its sister company, Canada Cordage in Ontario, were acquired in May, 2020 by Martin Thiel and Rishi Sahel and rebranded as Orion Cordage.

“Our new owners acquired us and expanded us in areas we hadn’t been before in the midwest and western U.S. We now have more business from there,” Venturelli said.

Orion Ropeworks and Canada Cordage have been manufacturing and distributing rope in North America for over 160 years.

The companies have over 1,000 rope formulas designed for characteristics such as yield, tenacity, abrasion resistance, UV stability, elongation and firmness of lay. The companies supply industrial and retail products to various industries across the continent, including various departments within the U.S. and Canadian governments.
