Ocean Renewable Power Co. has hired Perry Marine & Construction to install its tidal turbine unit off the coast of Eastport.
PMC, a joint venture of Morrison Manufacturing in Perry and CPM Constructors in Freeport, will perform construction management and assembly work for ORPC's TidGen Power System that will be installed in two phases over the next two years, according to a press release from ORPC. PMC will purchase or lease a property near ORPC's project site and build a facility there in order to provide services. The marine construction company has also committed to using local labor, as well as involving students from Husson University's Boat School and Washington County Community College in Calais, according to the release.
Portland-based ORPC began testing a 60-kilowatt prototype of the tidal turbine generator in February and is using the data to develop the 150-kilowatt unit. Manufacturing work for the unit's components will be put out to bid. ORPC is also working to establish a turbine manufacturing center, called the Maine Marine Energy Center, at the Eastport Business Center. In September, the city of Eastport and Washington County won a $1.4 million federal grant for the project, which is expected to create 75 jobs.
