ORPC prepares river generator for Alaska test
The Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power Co., which designed and operates North America’s first grid-connected tidal power generator in Eastport, said it has completed testing of a smaller turbine generator to be installed in Alaska’s Kvichak River this summer.
The company said in a press release that its tests with the Eastport Port Authority and the Maine Maritime Academy demonstrated the system is reliable and durable enough for its first commercial-scale demonstration project in Alaska, to supply the village of Igiugig with renewable power. Residents of that village rely heavily on diesel generators for electricity.
ORPC said its RivGen Power System is designed for depths of up to 15 feet or more and applications in remote, off-grid or micro-grid communities. The Alaska project is funded in part by the Alaska Energy Authority, the U.S. Department of Energy and private investors.
