OSHA cites Lincoln Paper and Tissue

Lincoln Paper and Tissue is facing more than $200,000 in fines for safety violations, including some related to a September 2010 incident that injured an employee.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited the Lincoln paper mill for nine "alleged repeat and serious" violations and fined the company $212,000, according to the Bangor Daily News. A spokesman for OSHA told the paper that some of the violations are issues flagged during a 2008 inspection that were corrected but have since reccurred. Mill co-owner Keith Van Scotter told the paper that the mill's safety record has improved over the years and that all the citations have been corrected. On Sept. 16, an unnamed worker suffered serious burns from scalding hot water and steam. OSHA issued the company eight repeat citations with more than $196,000 in fines for failing to block the steam line to prevent a similar accident. A repeat citation is issued when a company has previously been cited for the same or similar violations in the past five years. OSHA also fined Lincoln Paper $15,500 for other issues, including inadequate employee knowledge of safety-related electrical work practices.

The company has 15 business days from Tuesday to meet with OSHA officials or contest the findings.
