Owners of Freeport eatery destroyed in fire pledge to rebuild

The owners of the 30-year-old Freeport eatery, the Corsican Cafe & Chowder House, say they plan to build a new restaurant in the same downtown Freeport location after an early morning fire on Wednesday destroyed the business’s building.

Corsican co-owner Robin Wade told the Portland Press Herald that she’s relieved that no one was hurt in the blaze that brought firefighters from the communities of Freeport, Brunswick, Topsham, Pownal and Yarmouth to battle the blaze at the two-and-a-half-story building that was built in 1870.

“It was only a building, we have insurance, no one got hurt,” Wade told the Press Herald.

The Maine Department of Labor has scheduled a Rapid Response outreach for Friday to help the 10 employees of Corsican to apply for unemployment benefits and other aid.
