The Las Vegas developer hoping to build a casino in Maine has selected the town of Oxford for its $184 million four-season facility. But the Olympia Group has not yet selected a specific site and is looking at several pieces of property along Route 26.
Dean Harrold, the vice chairman of the Olympia Group's gaming division, said in a press release that Oxford is attractive to his company for its plentiful workforce and its location as a gateway to the western mountains and ski region. Campaign spokeswoman Pat LaMarche says the developers will announce an exact location next week, the Associated Press reported. The casino will be called Oxford Highlands.
Oxford selectman on Oct. 2 voted unanimously to support a resort casino if voters statewide approve the casino on Nov. 4. Meanwhile, the Sun Journal reported that Rumford residents and selectmen were disappointed the casino wouldn't be coming to their town. Olympia Gaming in September took over the casino proposal from Seth Carey, the Rumford lawyer who started the campaign to locate a casino in Oxford County.
