A Westbrook steering committee has drafted a compromise between Pike Industries and Idexx Laboratories to try and end a long-standing dispute between the two companies.
Following more than two hours of public testimony yesterday, the 10-member panel reached a decision to recommend that Pike be limited to eight blasts per year at its quarry next to the Five Star Industrial Park, according to the Portland Press Herald. Pike officials had proposed 20 blasts a year and other improvements to lessen the impact of blasting and rock crushing on neighbors. Tony Buxton, Pike's attorney, said limiting operations to eight blasts a year "probably makes the quarry unprofitable," according to the American Journal.
Idexx, on the other hand, proposed Pike be allowed up to six blasts per year, along with other suggestions, in order for the biotech firm to proceed with plans for a $50 million expansion that would add 500 jobs. "However, a consent agreement with Pike that exceeds the levels proposed here will cause us to proceed with development plans in a nearby community at a site appropriate for a $50 million building," Idexx CEO Jonathan Ayers said in a release.
The panel, which was formed by Mayor Colleen Hilton, will make its recommendation to the city council Monday.
