PC Construction Co., headquartered in South Burlington, Vt., with an office in Portland, received an award from Associated General Contractors of America for its work on the Nest at Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley.

The project, completed in 2023, earned a 2025 Baldwin Group Build America Award for projects valued under $20 million.

“This project was truly unique, with its remote, high-altitude location and the need to balance innovative design and construction with environmental responsibility,” said Matt Cooke, PC’s president and CEO.

Constructing the 2,500-square-foot venue presented significant challenges, from its remote, high-altitude location to the need for careful environmental stewardship, according to a new release.

The top of the building has a living roof, recreating the natural alpine meadow above the building, as if the ground had been lifted up for the building to be tucked into. The interior includes a kitchen, 80-seat dining area and 14-seat bar that are designed to easily transform into an open-concept event space.

The Nest is approximately 2,700 square feet and is a triangular structure adorned with a living roof brimming with fragrant hay-scented ferns and lowbush blueberries.

Perched at 3,620 feet, the area of the restaurant is home to Bicknell’s thrush, a rare bird species native to the region. The plan included a goal to ensure their late-spring breeding season was not disturbed during construction. Design features include a removable bird screen for the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows and a post-built foundation that reduced watershed disruption, with a goal to ensure the structure remained a friendly neighbor to surrounding ecosystems.

In addition to PC, Saddleback worked with Davies Toews Architecture and Maine Audubon.

Members of the PC Construction team accepted the award at AGC’s Annual Convention in Columbus, Ohio.

“PC’s partnership was essential in bringing this project to completion in time for the ski season,” said Jim Quimby, Saddleback’s general manager.

Last year, Associated General Contractors of America recognized PC Construction for its work on the University of Southern Maine’s Portland Commons Residence Hall and McGoldrick Center for Career and Student Success.
