Habitat for Humanity York County wants to increase housing production

Habitat for Humanity York County is seeking land in Kennebunk or the surrounding area to build a subdivision.

The quest is to increase housing production to four homeownership units constructed and sold annually.

“The biggest challenge to Habitat’s mission right now is the availability of affordable building lots, and this is a particular challenge in Kennebunk,” said Amy Nucci, Habitat’s executive director.

The nonprofit said it received the promise of support from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation in Kennebunkport to help Habitat acquire property to build a subdivision in the greater Kennebunk region.

The subdivision would be named in honor of Somers, who gave to many charitable causes, the foundation said.

The support will help Habitat acquire land for a larger project, said Nucci.

Habitat for Humanity York County partners with households earning up to 80% of the area median income to create affordable homeownership opportunities. Partners purchase the home through an affordable mortgage, and mortgage proceeds are recycled to build future Habitat for Humanity homes.

Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity York County has completed 36 homeownership units and plans to complete three more in 2025.

Habitat for Humanity acquires land through both donations and purchases and is always open to creative and outside the box solutions.

Individuals, businesses, nonprofits and others who might have land to donate or sell are encouraged to reach out to Habitat. For more information, click here or contact Nucci at 207-985-4850 or amy@habitatyorkcounty
