Another 19 jobs have been cut at Pen Bay Healthcare in Rockport, the third round of layoffs at the organization this year.
CEO Roy Hitchings on Friday announced that 19 positions would be eliminated, four of which were vacant and three of which were management posts, according to the Herald Gazette. One of the affected employees was placed in another job. The cuts were part of cost-cutting measures that included reducing benefits and hours for some employees and per diem workers, trimming travel and maintenance costs and continuing a wage freeze instituted last year. In a statement, Hitchings attributed the changes to declining patient volumes, the economic climate and $7 million the state owes it in MaineCare reimbursements. Pen Bay, the parent organization of the Penobscot Bay Medical Center and Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice, employs more than 100 physicians and 1,500 other employees.
In March, Pen Bay cut 15 workers and eliminated seven positions as part of its effort to shave $3 million from its 2010-2011 budget. A month prior, the organization cut 10 positions and reduced hours for employees.
