A mental health referral agency in Auburn has a year to come into compliance with state regulations after a surprise inspection revealed a multitude of infractions, including improperly secured patient records and failure to pay therapists.
The Maine Department of Health and Human Services issued a report Wednesday detailing deficiencies at Possibilities Counseling, which refers clients to 550 affiliate therapists and handles the billing and back-office operations for those affiliates, according to the Sun Journal. In its letter to President Wendy Bergeron, DHHS said Possibilities must share monthly financial reports to ensure affiliate therapists are paid and properly secure patient records, among other stipulations. The state agency issued a conditional license to the company, which was also cited for employing Bergeron's friends and family members who had not been properly trained or vetted, according to the paper.
DHHS performed the inspection two days after 16 of 18 Possibilities staffers quit. Bergeron did not respond to messages left by the paper.
