Pen Bay cuts positions, hours

Pen Bay Healthcare in Rockland has cut 10 positions and reduced hours for others, citing the economy and unpaid patient bills.

In addition to cutting positions, the parent company of Penobscot Bay Medical Center reduced hours for seven others, according to the Bangor Daily News. In a memo to employees sent last week, Pen Bay Healthcare CEO Roy Hitchings said additional layoffs, wage freezes and benefit reductions could be implemented sometime in March. The health care organization attributed the changes to the poor economy and an increase in bills unpaid by patients.

Statewide, an increase in bad debt from unpaid bills and charity care provided to eligible patients has led hospitals to cut 300 positions this year, according to the paper.
