A report by the Sun Journal has found that nearly all of the state's six largest hospitals and their parent organizations paid their CEOs more than the national average.
According to data analyzed by the Lewiston newspaper, many hospital CEOs received more than the national average of $490,000 in compensation packages. Peter Chalke, at the time the CEO of both Central Maine Healthcare and Central Maine Medical center, received $2 million in salary and benefits in 2006, while outgoing Maine Medical Center CEO Vincent Conti received $1.4 million. MaineHealth CEO William Caron Jr. received a compensation package that equaled $1.3 million, while the CEOs of the state's other larger hospitals and health care organizations received salaries in the mid to high six figures.
The information has raised questions by some of the state's legislators and representatives of health care coalitions, as state hospital representatives urge more Medicare reimbursements to keep from cutting services and positions, according to the paper. "As we struggle to find ways to control health care costs, these huge salaries do raise eyebrows at the State House and have led to lots of conversation among appropriations committee members," Rep. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, told the paper.
