Penobscot Community Health Care, a primary care network serving northeastern Maine, will open a new pediatric clinic next year in a former Verizon Wireless call center at 6 Telcom Drive in Bangor.
The Bangor Daily News reported that, at 20,000 square feet, the new space will be more than double the size of the existing clinic for children and teenagers, at 1068 Union St., Bangor. It will have 30 examination rooms, nine more than currently available.
The new clinic, on the second floor of the Verizon building, will provide primary care, mental health services and special services for foster children and infants with prenatal drug exposure, according to the BDN. The clinic will also include an on-site pharmacy.
Penobscot Community Health will move its speech and audiology services, currently housed at 992 Union St. in Bangor, to the first floor of the building, which has been vacant since the call center closed in 2017.
Other departments may also be relocated, the BDN said. Penobscot currently operates 16 locations in six cities and towns, including an outpatient infusion clinic that opened in July at 1012 Union St. in Bangor.
“There’s a lot in flux,” Lori Dwyer, president and CEO of Penobscot Community Health Care, told the BDN. “We’re moving and adding new services.”
It treated over 65,000 patients in 2016, according to its website, and is the largest of the 19 Federally Qualified Health Centers in Maine, and second-largest of the 100 centers in New England.
The qualification designates centers that receive certain federal grants to care for low-income patients.
The new clinic is expected to open in the fall of 2019, and Dwyer said it would create new jobs during its first year, although she didn’t know how many. Penobscot currently employs over 750 people.
The Telcom Drive building was purchased in June for $1.85 million by David St. Germain, owner of development company Sky Villa LLC of Bangor, the BDN reported. The building and land were assessed earlier this year at over $4 million.
