Penobscot Community Health Care, a primary care network serving northern Maine, has opened a new pediatric care center in Bangor in a former Verizon call center.
The new location opened its doors at 7 am. Monday, part of a plan to bring expanded services to more patients.
“This project is an inspiring example of collaboration,” said Lori Dwyer, president and CEO of Penobscot Community Health Care, in a news release, highlighting the involvement of general contractor Dunbar & Brawn Construction and landlord Sky Villa LLC, a Bangor-based property developer. "This was a team effort and everyone should be proud of the result.”
Penobscot Pediatrics currently serves about 10,000 pediatric patients who account for some 32,000 visits each year to its primary care and mental health providers, as well as its walk-in care providers.
Penobscot County Health Care operates the area's only pediatric walk-in care facility, open seven days a week.
The new facility, at 6 Telcom Drive, a will allow for additional growth, including and especially for an additional two to four mental health providers. Penobscot Community Health Care expects to see a 20% jump in patient numbers in the expanded space.
Penobscot Pediatrics is on the second floor of the building, and has 30 exam rooms, up from 21 exam rooms at the former center. The first floor, expected to be operational this winter, will include space for speech therapy, audiology services, and mental health services.
The building also features an external mural created by Maine artists David Hurley and Peter Walls, in keeping with the building’s theme of “woods and waters.”
The Telcom Drive building was purchased last year for $1.85 million by David St. Germain, owner of Sky Villa. The building and land were assessed in 2018 at more than $4 million.
Penobscot Community Health Care provides comprehensive, integrated primary health care services in the areas of audiology, care management, chiropractic care, community care and geriatrics, community care, dental services, family medicine, infusion therapy, laboratory services, medical specialties, mental health, nutrition, osteopathic manipulation therapy, pediatrics, pharmacy, physical therapy, podiatry, recovery, speech therapy, walk-in care, women's health and X-ray.
