Pharma touts economic benefit to state

Maine is one of 17 states where the nation's top pharmaceutical trade group is touting the economic benefits of clinical drug trials.

A report from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America — called "Research in Your Backyard" — touts the economic impact of clinical drug trials in Maine by citing a 2008 study from Archstone Consulting, which said then that biopharmaceutical research supported about 12,000 jobs in the state that year.

Those jobs, the report states, paid employees $119.4 million and generated over $30 million in taxes to federal and state governments.

The Associated Press reported that Gov. Paul LePage was on hand Friday for a press conference to introduce the new report that includes praise for the pharmaceutical industry from the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The report shows that Maine health care organizations have hosted more than 550 clinical trials since 2009, which Dana Connors, president of the state chamber, said have helped sustain jobs at Maine research centers and hospitals.

The report shows that Maine patients are being recruited for 57 clinical trials of new chronic disease drugs this year.
