Pharmacy robberies double in 2012

The number of Maine pharmacy robberies more than doubled from 2011.

The Associated Press reported that by the year's end, authorities logged 56 pharmacy robbery reports, up from 22 last year.

That year-end total includes two more robberies since Dec. 14. The increases caused Bangor area Rite Aid pharmacies to bring on additional security staff to help protect some of its 60 locations in Maine.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said many of this year's robbers took desperate measures to acquire drugs, prompting the formation of a state panel to address the issue.
