The first two pharmacy schools in the state will open this fall with the blessing of a national accreditation organization.
The University of New England in Portland and Husson University in Bangor both were informed Monday that the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education in Chicago has awarded pre-candidacy status to their pharmacy schools, according to the Portland Press Herald. The status confers the council's approval of their academic and clinical programs and allows the schools to enroll students in September.
The council will evaluate each school through the graduation of its first doctoral class before awarding full accreditation, the paper reported. UNE received 790 applications for its first class of 100 students in the fall, and 60 students have paid tuition deposits to enroll in Husson's first doctoral class of 65. Husson's pharmacy school will be located on its existing campus, while UNE is building a $12.3 million pharmacy school on Stevens Avenue in Portland that is expected to be finished in July.
