Pike Industries, Falmouth construction co. fined

Two Portland-area companies are facing fines. Pike industries has been fined $4,500 by the city of Westbrook for two quarry blasts that violated an agreement, while Falmouth-based Benjamin Construction Inc. has been fined $4,200 by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration for an equipment accident.

Pike's two blasts last month exceeded vibration limits set in a fall 2010 agreement reached by the company, neighbor Idexx Laboratories and the city that ended a years-long dispute over quarry operations, according to the Portland Press Herald. The agreement limits Pike to eight blasts a year that do not exceed a ground vibration limit of 0.5 inches per second. The blasts on Dec. 9 and Dec. 14 were 0.73 and 0.59 inches per second, respectively. A Pike representative said the company would pay the fine and does not expect future blasts to exceed the limit.

Meanwhile, OSHA fined Benjamin Construction for safety violations after a loader and its operator broke through the floor of a Sanford mill building and fell 18 feet, according to the Press Herald. OSHA said the company erred by allowing the equipment to be used on a floor that could not support it. The operator was evaluated at a hospital and released the same day. Company owner Edward Benjamin told the paper the company does not plan to contest the fine.
