Witham buys four more hotels

Hotelier David Witham has added another Down East property to his holdings, and also purchased hotels in southern Maine and New Hampshire.

His company, Witham Family Properties, on Tuesday bought the Bar Harbor Hotel for an undisclosed price. The hotel is valued at $4.25 million by the town, according to the Ellsworth American. He also recently bought the Comfort Inn in South Portland, the Hampton Inn in Saco and the Comfort Inn in Danvers, Mass. In the Down East region, Witham and his company own eight hotels, and he is also a controlling partner in several more. In all, he controls more than 1,000 hotel rooms in Hancock County, and the properties have a combined value of more than $50 million.

Witham is also embroiled in a legal battle with rival hotelier Tom Walsh, whose company, Ocean Properties, is building a $12 million hotel in Bar Harbor. Witham is challenging the town's April 2010 approval of the project and successfully appealed to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. In November, the case was returned to superior court for more arguments.
