Plan nixed for former seminary campus

A large-scale plan to redevelop the former campus of the Bangor Theological Seminary has been dropped after the nonprofit behind the project said it would cost too much.

Bangor-based Penobscot Community Health Care planned to purchase the 9.25-acre campus and develop space for health care and community services, as well as low-cost housing for senior citizens and medical students, according to the Bangor Daily News. But the total cost of redeveloping the site would have been "hugely expensive," PCHC President Robert Carlson told the paper.

Bangor Theological Seminary left its campus for nearby Husson College in 2005 after years of shrinking enrollment numbers. Developer Paul Cook, who purchased the property last summer with business partner Kenneth Ray for $1.65 million, told the Daily News he was "disappointed" the PCHC deal fell through.
