Plans for a $40 million hotel complex on the Maine Wharf are expected as early as today at Portland's city hall.
Developer Eric Cianchette, who owns the Maine Wharf, appeared before city councilors at a workshop Monday night to test the waters on his proposal to build a 150-room hotel, restaurant and banquet complex on the site, according to the Portland Press Herald.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, nothing had been submitted to the Planning Department, but staff there expect to receive a zoning text amendment that would allow this sort of development on the waterfront, a city planner told Mainebiz. The amendment would have to be reviewed twice by the Planning Board and then referred to City Council for action before any development could begin at the site.
Cianchette's plans call for a 65-foot, 5-story hotel on the wharf with a two-deck parking lot. The plan, unveiled in January, calls for the first level of the Maine Wharf to remain for marine use.
