Plum Creek agrees to fine for clearcutting

Plum Creek Maine Timberlands has agreed to pay more than $38,000 in a settlement with the state over violations of the state's forest practices law.

The company will pay $38,675 in civil penalties for improper harvesting operation on its property that resulted in three clearcuts that did not meet guidelines from the Maine Forest Service, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Conservation. The harvesting did not follow any plans prepared by a licensed forester and did not leave adequate separation zones, both required by state rules. Plum Creek Maine Timberlands also agreed to adjust its policy for handling regeneration harvests and to participate in forest practices training.

A Plum Creek representative said the clearcuts were unintentional and that the company took full responsibility, according to the release. Plum Creek owns 929,000 acres of forestland in Franklin, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Somerset counties.
